Wave size and sets: watch for a few minutes. Count the waves in a set and the gaps between them.

Wind texture: glassy, smooth water means clean faces. A ruffled, bumpy surface means the wind is already up.

Crowd: count the heads in the lineup. Beginners Bay stays mellow most mornings but fills as the day warms.

Shape and tide: fat, slow waves usually mean the tide is too high. Steeper peaks that stand up and break are a sign it is working.
