Nicaragua Surf Map: Find the Best Surf Spots in Nicaragua

Beginner Bay — The gentlest, most forgiving surf spot in Popoyo, ideal for first-time surfers and intermediates learning fundamentals. The break is sand- and soft-bottom, with mellow waves that usually peel slowly. Mostly lefts though sometimes mushy rights or whitewater. On typical days the surf is small and manageable, offering long, gentle rides with minimal risk. It’s widely used by surf schools, with easy paddle-outs and board rentals available nearby.

Popoyo Reef — Breaks over a shallow rock/reef shelf, offering both lefts and rights. Works on almost any swell, tide, and wind : highly consistent. Can range from modest swell (~2-3 ft) to larger days; offers hollow sections or more mellow “open-face” waves depending on conditions. Best suited for intermediate to advanced surfers wanting reliable reef-break surf.

Outer Reef Popoyo — A powerful slab-style reef break about 150 meters offshore. When it fires (big swells), waves can be massive, very hollow and heavy with steep drop-ins and fast walls. Suitable only for experienced/advanced surfers comfortable with slab reef breaks and quick drop-ins.

Playa Santana — Sand-bottom beach break along a long stretch of shoreline. Waves break both left and right. On smaller swells or modest conditions, the peaks are punchy but manageable; on larger swells, it can produce powerful, hollow, barreling peaks, sometimes with tight, steep takeoffs.

Playa Colorado — A rivermouth sand-bar/beach-break. Breaks both left and right. When conditions align, the waves are often powerful and hollow, capable of producing punchy barrels and fast, steep faces, sometimes reaching double-overhead size; on smaller swells the waves can be more manageable (shoulder-high to head-high). Best suited for intermediate to advanced surfers who are comfortable with beach-break barrels and variable surf.

Playa Maderas — Accessible ~9–25 minutes north of town depending on transport. Sand-bottom with beach-break peaks that often form A-frames, breaking both left and right. Waves range from manageable rolling surf (good for beginners) up to more powerful, steeper sections. On bigger swell days the faces can be chest- to overhead-high, with steeper takeoffs and sections that reward intermediate-to-advanced surfers.

Playa Remanso — Small bay beach (about 300 m of coastline) close to town. The nearest surf-accessible beach from San Juan del Sur. Gentle sand-bottom waves that break both left and right, usually mellow and forgiving, making this spot ideal for beginners or surf lessons. On rare larger swells (e.g. in wet season) it can offer more push and longer rides, but mostly it stays soft and manageable.

Lance's Left — A long, left-hand point/reef break. The take-off is over reef/rock bottom, and waves peel along a curved coastline, offering long, open-faced lefts. On smaller days the wave is mellow and “slopey,” yielding forgiving, rideable walls; on good swell days it gets faster with steeper sections and the possibility of barrel-type sections or powerful walls.

Playgrounds — A versatile reef-break wave, breaking over a cobblestone/reef bottom. It offers both lefts (usually the longer wave) and rights. On smaller to moderate swell it gives smooth, rippable walls; on bigger swells it can get steeper and more powerful, still offering rideable sections. It tends to be cleaner with lighter winds, and is accessible only by boat. The wave suits a wide range of surfers from intermediate to experienced.

Main Beach — This is the central, most accessible surf area. The break is sand-bottom, with waves that break both left and right. It tends to produce mellow, manageable waves with soft barrel sections and medium-length rides. Good for beginners and intermediates.

Pistols — Located along the northern cove/front-stretch of the main beach, Pistols can deliver fast, steep take-offs and barreling waves (both left and right). This break suits more advanced surfers.

Pangas — Found between the main beach and the southern area known as “La Vuelta.” Pangas offers longer, often steeper waves, occasionally with barrels. It tends to handle a bit more swell than the main beach.

La Vuelta — A left-point break on the south end of town. Best around low tide and when there’s a bit more swell. Offers longer rides and somewhat more forgiving take-offs, making it suitable for intermediate surfers or those looking to improve.

Punta Miramar — Reef/point break. This is the signature wave for the area. It holds the most swell and breaks as a left-hand point (with takeoffs over reef/rock bottom). During bigger swells the “outside” takeoff zones can offer steep or powerful walls; on smaller swells or higher tides the “inside” section can still produce decent fast reefy lefts (typically waist- to head-high).

Pipes — Mixed break: rights over mostly_sand-bottom and a peeling left over reef. Pipes can get hollow and fast, especially rights that wedge up from the takeoff zone. Ideal on a falling mid-tide or incoming low tide.

Shacks — Reef break. A very fast, well-shaped left that can get hollow; best on mid-to-high tide. On low tide or small days it can become shallow and section out making it more advanced and potentially risky, but rewarding when it’s working.

Shifty's — Beach-break (sand-bottom) just south of the reef platform near Shacks. Breaks both right and left. Produces shifty peaks, bowls, and occasionally barrels or lips/ramp-like sections. Works best at mid-to-high tides. Great for a wide range of skill levels from beginner to advanced depending on swell.

The Boom — A powerful, hollow, and fast-breaking beach break over sand bottom, situated just north of the estuary near Aposentillo. It delivers both lefts and rights with heavy, barreling peaks that often wedge up close to shore. On its better days, waves can reach roughly 3–8 ft, offering steep, hollow faces and barreling sections. Excellent for tube-hunters and advanced surfers. The ride tends to be shorter but intense; strong sandbar shifts and rips add to the challenge. Best suited for intermediate to advanced surfers seeking aggressive, high-performance waves.

Aposentillo — A softer, more forgiving beach break located a bit north of The Boom, near Punta Aposentillo. The waves here are gentler, with easier drops and mellower peaks, suitable for beginners, long-boarders, or intermediates wanting laid-back rides and practice sessions. More advanced surfers may still find fun peeling sections when swell and sandbars align.
